Mather, David; Donovan, Cynthia; Jayne, Thomas S.; Weber, Michael T.; Chapoto, Antony; Mazhangara, Edward; Bailey, Linda; Yoo, Kyeongwon; Yamano, Takashi; Mghenyi, Elliot W..
This paper summarizes and synthesizes across the results of a set of country studies on the effects of prime-age adult mortality on rural households in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Zambia. Each study is based on large representative rural household surveys. These findings have implications for the design of efforts to mitigate some of the most important effects of rural adult mortality, and for key development policies and priorities.

Are Staple Foods Becoming More Expensive For Urban Consumers In Eastern And Southern Africa? Trends in Food Prices, Marketing Margins, and Wage Rates in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia AgEcon
Mason, Nicole M.; Jayne, Thomas S.; Donovan, Cynthia; Chapoto, Antony.
The world food and financial crises threaten to undermine the real incomes of urban consumers in eastern and southern Africa. This study investigates patterns in staple food prices, wage rates, and marketing margins for urban consumers in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia between 1993 and 2009. There is high correlation among wage rate series for various government and private sector categories. We find that average formal sector wages rose at a faster rate than retail maize meal and bread prices in urban Kenya and Zambia between the mid-1990s and 2007. Although the 2007/08 food price crisis partially reversed this trend, the quantities of staple foods affordable per daily wage in urban Kenya and Zambia during the 2008/09 marketing season were still...

Assessment of the Farm Level Agronomic and Financial Benefits of the Magoye Ripper in Maize and Cotton Production in Southern and Eastern Provinces AgEcon
Kabwe, Stephen; Donovan, Cynthia; Samazaka, David.
This research focuses on the performance in the Magoye ripper in maize and cotton production in Eastern and Southern Provinces during the 2004/2005 productions year. Findings include the following: In maize production, the ripper enabled higher yields compared to traditional animal ploughing, by increasing the effectiveness of nitrogen fertilizer applications, resulting in net profits per hectare of ZK575,800 in Eastern Province and ZK93,800 in Southern Province; In cotton, the input applications and size of fields were the most important determinants of yield, and the ripper had no significant individual effect. Farmers using the ripper indicated that it helped conserve water, enabled early land preparation and early planting; and Farmers not using their...

Assessment of the Farm Level Financial Profitability of the Magoye RipperiIn Maize and Cotton Production in Southern and Eastern Provinces AgEcon
Kabwe, Stephen; Donovan, Cynthia; Samazaka, David.
With the risk of the drought in the agricultural production areas of Zambia, conservation farming (CF) was introduced as a set of technologies that can improve productivity while reducing plant stress due to moisture constraints. Under animal traction, CF involves using the Magoye ripper to minimize soil disturbance in land preparation and to help improve water conservation, thus enhancing farmers’ land and labor productivity. This technology has been promoted by Golden Valley Agricultural Research Trust (GART) and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector in Zambia and shows promise in on-station and on-farm trials. This research is based on actual farmer use of the ripper in Eastern and Southern Provinces in 2004/2005, a year with erratic rainfall...

Avaliação dos Impactos dos Programas de Monetização de Trigo e Óleos Comestíveis Não Refinados do Título II em Moçambique, 1997-2007. AgEcon
Donovan, Cynthia; Zavale, Helder; Tschirley, David L..

Can Cash Transfers Promote Food Security in the Context of Volatile Commodity Prices? A Review of Empirical Evidence. AgEcon
Magen, Benjamin B.; Donovan, Cynthia; Kelly, Valerie A..
This working paper synthesizes the theoretical and empirical literature on the use of cash transfers in response to food crisis situations, with particular attention to their use in situations that are exacerbated by volatile, often inflationary, commodity prices. The paper is designed for policymakers who are wondering if cash transfers might be an appropriate instrument in the context of 2008’s unstable commodity prices for both food and energy, but are unfamiliar with the literature and discussions surrounding the cash vs. food debate. After defining some key terms and presenting a brief review of the theory behind cash transfer use, the paper synthesizes evidence from studies that have evaluated past cash transfer programs. While the focus is on...

Cassava Commercialization in Mozambique AgEcon
Donovan, Cynthia; Haggblade, Steven; Salegua, Venancio Alexandre; Cuambe, Constantino; Mudema, Joao; Tomo, Alda.
Cassava supplies roughly 30% of all calories consumed in Mozambique, making it the country’s most important food security crop. Over the past several decades, growing urbanization and shifting demand patterns have led to growing opportunities for cassava processing and commercialization. This paper examines the commercial dynamics in Mozambique’s cassava value chain as well as the food security implications of growing cassava commercialization.

COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS OF CROSS-SECTIONAL HOUSEHOLD SURVEY DATA ON RURAL MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY: LESSONS LEARNED FROM INITIAL SURVEYS AgEcon
Mather, David; Donovan, Cynthia.
In southern Africa, HIV/AIDS is considered to be a critical factor conditioning rural economic development , exacerbating already difficult problems with climatic variability and poverty. In their efforts to use household surveys to obtain information on rural adult mortality and morbidity and their effects on rural household livelihoods, Michigan State University researchers and their local collaborators in the Ministries of Agriculture of Rwanda (MINAGRI) and Mozambique (MADER), have learned various lessons. Using household surveys to estimate the impact on the households requires careful attention to detail as well as skilled use of econometric tools. The difficult modeling issues involved in such estimation is not be discussed in this paper. Rather, we...

Emergency Needs Assessments and the Impact of Food Aid on Local Markets AgEcon
Donovan, Cynthia; McGlinchy, Megan; Staatz, John M.; Tschirley, David L..
This desk study is designed to assist WFP and other humanitarian agencies in understanding markets as they relate to emergencies, particularly the assessment of the impacts of emergencies and food aid deliveries on local commodity markets. In this work, we will focus on the impact of actual food commodity distribution on commodity markets, one of the most common emergency response alternatives. However, the report widens the debate to assist humanitarian agencies in seeing the link between actions taken by and with households and individuals during and after an emergency, the effects those actions have on markets, but also effects that market structure and performance may have in mitigating food insecurity.
